Introduction to electrons in crystals
A meaningful discussion of semiconductors requires some background on
how electrons move through solids. The free-electron gas model simply
assumes that the electrons move through an empty periodic box. But of
course, to describe a real solid the box should really be filled with
the countless atoms around which the conduction electrons move.
